Many months ago I was sold a large lot of “Superwash Alpaca/Nylon” sock/fingering yarn — 40 balls at 100 grams apiece.  When it arrived, it was 40 balls at 50grams apiece and UNlabeled.  In spite of the weight discrepancy, after several communications I was assured that it WAS Superwash Alpaca/Nylon, imported from a Chinese manufacturer, as this was how the person I bought it from acquired it from another party, although they couldn’t ascertain the percentage of each, so I’m going to assume it is around 80/20 to 70/30.

I took 20 of the balls, turned them into hanks to get accurate measures (about 210-220 yards per ball), and dyed them.  They feel fine and took the dye like I’d expected a superwash-&-nylon yarn to behave — no shrinkage or felting in the process (which sometimes happen with my other yarns).

This is how they looked immediately after dyeing:

Instead of making plain gradient sets within each color, I used an example that Jill showed me, for making a five-color palette of mixed colors, like this:

My colors didn’t end up exactly like the example I was aiming for, but I went ahead with my plan anyway.  And this is how they looked when I turned these 20 hanks into 40 mini-hanks:
