After many requests…
One of my regular customers (Hi, Belinda!) came to me with an idea for her niece’s Tallit — her niece wanted “rainbow colors with some dark”, and also “rainbow flag colors — she wants to be noticed”. I had to go look up what a tallit is — it’s a form of Jewish prayer shawl or stole, long rectangular, rather than triangle. Three skeins of multicolored rainbow colors would knit up with a mish-mash of colors, but wouldn’t particularly suggest the rainbow flag, so I suggested half-skeins of rainbow solids, to be knit in stripes, with a bit of black to border each color for a little extra ‘pop’.
I used to offer a special “Rainbow Pride Pack” assembled of commercial yarns from my former supplier (there were also other “Pride Packs” of other colors), but when the relationship with that supplier went south, so did the Pride Packs, and I’ve not had them since 2010. In the years since, several times a year, I get requests for Rainbow Pride Packs, but didn’t have them readily available any more, and my ability to dye solids was less than stellar.
However, because she requested it, I figured I’d give it a shot. I had to develop a different way to make the recipe and a variant new technique to get the yarns fully saturated in color AND fully covered all over without too much variation. Because of these extra materials and labor involved, they are priced accordingly.
And with that introduction, I now present to you the new “Rainbow Pride Pack – II“, to be available at first on Phydlbitz Sock, in either half-skein size (215 yards ea.) or quarter-skein size (110 yards ea.) Later this week, I will be creating some on the Superwash Merino Sport weight on half-size hanks (140 yards ea.) Full size hanks will also be available as well, of course. 🙂
For now, these can only be custom ordered as a set and will be individually custom-dyed, so expect 2.5-3 weeks from date of order to date of shipping. Depending on how well these sell, there may be extras on the Blog Reader Specials page. Each will be individually dyed, so there may be some minor variation from one set to the next. If you need multiple sets, they should be ordered together to ensure the closest match.
How to order: for introduction this month (February), I am asking that you email me your request and I’ll write up an individual invoice at this introductory rate:
Rainbow Pride Pack – 7 Phydlbitz whole hanks = $182.00
Rainbow Pride Pack – 7 Phydlbitz Half-size hanks = $91.00
Rainbow Pride Pack – 7 Phydlbitz Quarter-size hanks = $45.50
After February, the price will go up, as other yarn bases and other color options are developed.
So gorgeous!
So these packs/prices are all for fingering weight, correct?
And then you’ll add prices for packs of sport weight later?
YUMMY.
Hi Jenny. Yes, the prices shown are for the Phydlbitz Sock Yarn, which normally run at $26.00 per skein, a normal whole skein.
As it happens: the Superwash Merino sport is also $26.00 for a normal whole skein at 280 yards, so a half-skein would be 140 yards, and the intro pricing would be the same. I’m not going to do quarter-size skeins on the sport — it would only be 70 yards apiece and more work for me than makes sense.
I’ll be doing 2 sets of the SW Merino Sport at the end of this week, and each of those sets will be $91.00 for February.
