Stay Cool, Y’all!

Knitivity Posted on 27 June 2021 by Knitterman3 July 2021

Houston is, of course, plenty hot, but this is normal for southeast Texas.  I will complain about it as I always do, but our friends in the Pacific Northwest (particularly Oregon) are having record-breaking extreme heat this week even worse … Continue reading →

First Socks of Summer!

Knitivity Posted on 21 June 2021 by Knitterman21 June 2021

Greetings!

Summer started yesterday, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, which means we are into Hurricane Season (which runs 1 June through 30 November).  If you’ve followed my journey over the last 15+ years, you know I am not a big fan of summer weather.  I hope wherever you are that you are able to take time off, go traveling, or whatever gives you pleasure.

As for me, I noticed yesterday that I was able to start and finish a dye session while it was still daylight — it has taken longer than I expected, but my stamina is slowly returning after last year’s surgeries and health concerns, so that’s a good thing.

And, speaking of yesterday’s dyeing, I am particularly tickled with what came out.

I was able to get a few cones* of  Phydlbitz Sock (my supplier had been out for quite a while), so I did up my usual 24 skeins.  Most of these were done with leftover dyes from last week’s session, although I did need to mix up two more jars of new dyes.  Most of the leftover dyes were blends, which I then blended and reblended in new ways.  Some of them (like the Twinset #520-521) was were done with a single jar of blended-and-reblended color, so that as the dye set, it separated on the yarn as it was steaming, creating its own unique bleeding variation.  On the  Twinset #522-523 there were originally assorted blues and reds that got mixed into a deep rich burgundy, but in the steamer some of the blue spread out creating an interesting blue halo sort of effect.  In fact most of the sprinkle/splatter dye jobs have a halo of color spreading around.

* As I mentioned last week, I would like to stock up on cones of the Phydlbitz Sock yarn base, but I don’t have the funds to get all that I want right away, so I’m offering an opportunity to buy one or more cones to build my working inventory.  In return you will get 3 skeins per each cone purchased, without worrying about price increases, and you’ll get your 3 skeins with free shipping within the U.S.  At the current price, 3 skeins would cost $81.00 plus shipping, so $75 is a pretty good deal.  And you can claim your 3 skeins either as Blog Reader Specials, or use them to request a custom dye job, or give them as gifts during the holiday season or any other time; I’m happy to ship to your gift recipient.  This offer is good through the end of this week.

Twinset #516-517 was done with segmented sprinkling of four different colors, from yellow to orange to red to purple.  Similar red and orange colors were used for Twinset #524-525, but the darkest color is a different dark navy-purple as was used on #510-511.

To my eye, Twinset #530-531 is most  interesting — it was a DumpDye of the blues, yellows, and orange, creating an interesting green, but when you see it close-up, you’ll see tiny specks of Sky Blue.  Seen from a distance after knitting, it will read as just a pleasant green, but viewed closely you’ll see those tiny flecks.

If you want a better view or closer picture of a particular Twinset, please let me know.  I’m happy to photograph individual Twinsets off the rack until they are reskeined and labeled for presentation.

These are all Phydlbitz Sock, 75/25 Superwash Corriedale/Nylon, 430 yards each and are $27.00 each.

To claim the ones you want, just send me an email (ray@knitivity.com).  You don’t have to take both skeins of a Twinset.  These will be ready to ship on or before Thursday.

Wow! Better Than I Expected!

Knitivity Posted on 16 June 2021 by Knitterman16 June 2021

I hope this finds you all well, and healthy, and cool.  Seems like just about everyone is experiencing excessive heat this month.  In Texas, ERCOT has suggested there may be blackouts later in the week due to excess demand on the electrical grid.  Call me cynical* but ERCOT is the Electric Reliability Council of Texas — the same folks who failed to heed repeated warnings (over several years!) to properly weatherize our state’s electrical grid and subsequently let us all freeze  during February.  Now they’re asking US to take precautions and use our air conditioning set to 78, and to resist using our pool pumps.  Yes, they literally sent out an email asking us to limit our use of pool pumps!!!

“Life is a journey; I’m taking the cynic route.”
— Ray Whiting, 1995-ish

Well, anyway … enough about that.  I’m not the only one suffering in the heat, and at least my a/c does pump out some semblance of cool air.  Or at least cooler than outside.

Between last night and this morning I was able to dye 2 dozen skeins of Sport Wt. Merino, 330 yards each.  The last time I tried to do a batch of this yarn I screwed up the processing and it felted too much to redeem.   This time I took precautions, and now that the collection is outside drying, I think I did okay all around.  And I am definitely impressed with how some of the colors came out.  I’d forgotten how easily the dyes migrate on non-superwash wools.

All of these were dyed as Twinsets (but there’s no obligation to take both skeins of a Twinset if you don’t want them).  Every Twinset has at least two different dyes, either in segments,  splatters, or blends, so that they will work for many different types of patterns, depending on how you want your colors to show.

Each of these will be normally priced on the Blog Reader Specials page at $27.00 each but for Wednesday and Thursday (June 16-17) you may have preview pricing at $25.00 each; just make sure your email request has an email time stamp before Thursday midnight, my time.  Houston is on Central Daylight Time, which is -0500 from GMT.

To claim the ones you want, just send me an email (ray@knitivity.com) indicating which numbered items you would like to have.  Weather permitting, these should be dried and ready to reskein and label on Friday, and ready to ship on Saturday.

Cone Again….?

Knitivity Posted on 11 June 2021 by Knitterman11 June 2021

A few years ago, I used to have a deal where if you pay for a cone of yarn for my inventory ($75.00 for each cone), you would get 3 future BRS or custom dyed skeins in the next 12 … Continue reading →

No Black Was Used

Knitivity Posted on 7 June 2021 by Knitterman7 June 2021

Houston seems to have FINALLY gotten beyond a stretch of rain, and no serious threat of rain until next Monday, so that’s a good thing.

I went to see the eye doctor for my annual diabetic eye exam.  Not only do I need a new prescription for my glasses, but my cataracts are continue to develop.  Fortunately, no visible damage to the retinas from diabetes, and no glaucoma, so I should probably count my blessings.  Even so, I still need to sell more yarns to buy some new glasses straight away, and figure out how long I can wait before surgery for the cataracts.   Weird that the exam is free on my plan, but glasses are not.  I guess it’s like any sort of equipment maintenance — free to find problem, expensive to fix the problem.

I waited until most of the rains moved out before trying to dye yarns.  I started with 30 skeins to dye, but 2 skeins are bound for the trash straight away.  Not sure what happened but they came out “crunchy”; probably too much acid in the dye process and I immediately felt the difference as they came out of their pouch.  I’ve learned not to even bother trying to fix such yarn. Every industry has to allow for bad products in the mix, I suppose.  Frustrating for a small operation like mine, but it happens.  On the good side, I didn’t have to figure out how to show 15 Twinsets across two racks — each rack has 7 Twinsets.  🙂

As dark as some of them are, I assure you I didn’t use any black dye this time.  For example, #460-461 is a deep burgundy and dark charcoal-ish color; #484-485 is a Dump Dye blend of leftovers from all the other dyes I used; #470-471 is a dark asparagus and dark-dark avocado skin sort of two-tone.  actually there are several two-tone yarns, nearly all of which will result in a spiral stripe sock.  Then #468-469 and #474-475 have a similar purple but one has gold and the other has yellow. The  #466-467 Twinset is a two-tone of a deep red blend and straight pumpkin orange dye.  The Twinset #464-465 would pair nicely with last week’s #446-447 to make a miter squared baby blanket, alternating the pink squares and blue squares.

Because your monitor may be slightly different from mine, I would be happy to take a picture of a particular Twinset if you are interested.  I will lay them out flat on the ramp so you can see them in a different way and (if the sun cooperates) in a different light.

I should also remind that there is no obligation to take both skeins of a Twinset.  I dye Twinsets as a convenience for those wanting to make larger-than-socks projects — a Twinset of Phydlbitz Sock  is enough yardage for many of the popular shawl and crescent scarf patterns.  I do recommend alternating one ball to the other every few rows to avoid pooling and to avoid the sometimes obvious change-of-yarn difference that can occur.  My Twinsets aren’t exactly identical, but dyed together in the same pouch to ensure color compatibility across both skeins, with similar color sequencing across both skeins.

These are all Phydlbitz Sock, 75/25 Superwash Corriedale, 430 yards, at $27.00 for each skein.

I will aim to have these ready to ship on or before Thursday.

To claim the ones  you want, send me an email with your numbered requests.  Although it is rarely an issue, please make sure that PayPal has your current shipping address, since that is where I prepare your shipping labels.  I am, of course, happy to send gift yarn to some other address, but PayPal doesn’t always extend their seller/buyer protection if I ship to an address that they haven’t confirmed.

Available Yarns:
Rack 1 – 458, 459, 460, 461, 462, 463, 464, 465, 466, 467, 468, 469, 470, 471
Rack 2 – 472, 473, 474, 475, 476, 477, 478,  479, 480, 481, 482, 483, 484, 485
