How to Help
If you are interested in participating further, these are what we need:
- Yarns - must be easy-care, washable (acrylic, acrylic-wool, acrylic-cotton
blends: Plymouth Encore, Paton Decor, LionBrand Wool-Ease are all good,
as are Red Heart Classic or SuperSaver, Bernat, Caron, etc. -- most
of the smooth texture economy yarns at JoAnn's, Michael's, K-Mart, Wal*Mart,
etc. would be fine. Many people like the Lion Brand Home Spun variety,
as well
- Knitters / Crocheters - If you want to help knit up some of the donated
yarns for this project, let
me know -- VOLUNTEER KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS ARE NEEDED
- Hand-knitted and hand-crocheted garments for adults and children such
as:
- Hats/watch-caps
- Scarves
- Mittens
- These should be functional and clean/new. Many
of the recipients will not have access to specialty-care facilities
and need basic winter bundling garments. There are inadequate facilities
in New Orleans to distribute other clothing. We have received some
nice garments, and have had to seek out alternative distribution
sites for those. Most of the traditional clothing sites are inundated
with too much already, our own partnered distribution site is not
set up to properly process regular clothing, nor am I able to set
up a clothing distribution site.... ONLY KNITTED/CROCHETED HATS,
SCARVES, MITTENS at this time, please.
- Please, do NOT use the novelty yarns, chenilles, eyelash, faux fur,
etc. Those are glamorous and pretty, but we are making functional winterwear
for people who don't even have heat in their homes, barely have enough
money for food, trying to clean up their homes and rebuild their lives.
They don't need special-care, dry-clean-only type of fibers at this
time.
Articles should come with a hang-tag, indicating who made it and what
STATE you are from (not street address or city). You can take a simple
3x5 index card, punch a hole in it and tie it LOOSELY to the garment.
This will let our recipients know that care and comfort is coming from
all over the country.

Mark your finished product as to whether it is sized for a child, teen,
or adult.
What if you cannot knit/crochet?
That's okay -- we can also use donations for purchasing supplies and
covering expenses for sorting, labeling, and processing goods. If you
wish to help with resources, please feel free. Bundle Up New Orleans is
NOT a 501(c)3 charitable organization, so donations are not tax-deductible,
but are sincerely appreciated in support of this important work.
Where to find suitable patterns
There is an abundance of free patterns that are suitable for charity
work, including these:
