On the left is a set of “Aunt Gail” in sport weight 100% wool (sorry, this particular batch is committed — if you want “Aunt Gail” in something other than socks, just ask — I’ll be changing the way orders are made in the near future so that all the colorways can be done on [...]

I was just clearing off the kitchen counter, preparing for a dye-session this afternoon, and I was thinking “gosh wouldn’t it be lovely to have some of my knitterly buddies come over and help?” And then “Y’know, it would be really cool to have one or two helpers to assist with the pre-dye prep or [...]

First, an update for the SIL sock; it is moving right along, starting to look like a regular sock now. I switched over the to Orange for a while now and will probably do about 15-20 arounds before going back to the blue. You know how it is … you get to thinking there might [...]

Here we have two toes, two feet, two heels, and the start of two legs:
You can see that I made the heels just slightly narrower at the turn than the toe. But I am fascinated how when the foot is laid flat, the leg portion stands straight up. I’ve inserted one orange stripe just above [...]

Hey, guess what I’m doing today???
Yup, I opened one of the bags of the fleece I recently a while back, and have begun washing it.
Holy Mother of Gawd this sh*t stinks! Now, I appreciate a natural barnyard smell as much as the next raw fellow, but having bags of condensed barnyard wafting into my [...]

The requestors have decided! Number 2 it is!
This is the colorway named “Aunt Gail”, in honor and memory of Gail McHugh, long-time moderator of the KnitU list. A blend of purple, violet, teal, a touch of fuschia, and a few different shades of blue hidden in there. This can be ordered now from the Sock [...]

Okay, here’s the deal….
I have 3 balls of yarn — Mardi Gras Green, Gold, and Purple.
And I am trying to calculate the stitch orders to created a braided cable of the three. I know how to braid 3 panels (duuh), and I know how to do intarsia. But to created a braided scarf an yet [...]

When the Yarn Harlot was here in September, she made a reference to there being about five million knitters in the U.S. (or maybe she said in North America?). But I’m trying to find some accurate measure, even though I know that the knitting/crochet population fluctuates daily as some give it up, and others start.
Clearly, [...]

Check it out! I was knitting along on the SIL Socks and I noticed an odd phenomenon. Knitting with my Addi Turbo needles (nickel-plated, metal), I had developed a DIVOT on my thumbnail — the nail I use for guiding the needle, pushing stitches along and just about everything else. You can clearly see the [...]

Last night I finished the heels. I’m not entirely happy with them, but they are definitely good enough I don’t need to re-do them. At least not until SIL tries them on and I can see what exactly needs adjusting and where and how. Until then, I’m using standardized measures.
So… here’s the socks:
“But, Ray, how [...]

Here ya go…. let’s do some math, ‘kay?
This is how far I’ve come on the SIL Socks:
Overall length from the tip of the toe is just at 8 inches. Pretty soon I know I will have to insert the heel, turn the heel, end the heel, then knit the ankle and then the rest of [...]

According to my resources,
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice occurs on December 22, 2007 at 1:08 AM EST; and at 6:08 AM UT (Universal Time).
The shortest day of the year has passed (after tonight, that is) and we are now going to enjoy the daylight growing longer each day — at least until the [...]

Okay, I said yesterday I’d come back and give more info on doing corrective surgery on a sock. I’ve reached the second racing stripe with 10 rows of blue in between:
I’m doing the color changes for the toe and heel at the side of the foot, but all over modifications will occur at the center [...]

Here is what happens when a customer says, “Ohhhh, that’s pretty, but can you do with with just the pink and the brown?”
That is basically the strawberry and chocolate of the Neapolitan colorway, but without any of the undyed white showing. Just pink and brown. And of course, I have added it to the regular [...]

Sheesh!
Back in the good ol’ days it would have been shameful and indecent to appear in public in a sleeveless sweater.
But now, we have to be subjected to these sweaterless sleeves!!!
bwaahahahahahahaha.
No, seriously, I do NOT get it, but I’m sure someone will come up with a reason for disembodied sleeves. For those who [...]

(well, maybe some crochet, too)
I have all my ordered dyed and shipped (or will be when the mail carrier comes today), and I have a sale to advert, so I’ll have to write up what it is for sale. New Years is just a week from Tuesday, and I have to pay rent … which [...]

Okay, here’s the progress on the SIL socks:
I’m up to the first of the two “racing stripes” around the foot. The racing stripes are two arounds of contrast color, with 10 rounds of the teal in between. Y’all recall that this is inserted for fitting purposes later on (plus, racing stripes are cool).
I know [...]

Woo-hooo! Good Choice!
Hey, y’all remember when I did the Cygnus colorway a couple months ago?
Well, this morning I was visiting Astronomy Picture of the Day and noticed a special link below the regular picture for today. They have picked their Pictures of the Year and I was tickled to see that they included Cygnus the [...]

Okay, first off, I just added (yesterday) Biagio solids into the Rainbow Pride Yarn Packs on the Kits page. These are the Wool-Mohair blends identical to Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride (remember, Brown Sheep has me sell under my label because I don’t have a brick-and-mortar store and they don’t let internet-only stores sell under the [...]
