Anniversary Eve…?

Whew!!!!    I have electric power, as Scott announced, and that means the electric hot water heater was doing it’s thing.   It wasn’t until late evening that I actually took the time to avail myself of the hot shower.
Power came on early-mid afternoon, and suddenly there were a gazillion things to do — re-configure [...]

Great News!

Ray has power and hot water!  No cable or internet yet.

I’m sure he needed the exercise.

Ray arrived about 10AM at the library to get an hour online.  Problem being the library doesn’t open until 1PM on Mondays.  .
Other than that there is nothing new to report.

Seeing the light

This is Ray’s brother again
Ray can walk outside at night and see electric light 4 houses away in one direction and 3 blocks away in the other.  No one seems to have any answer as to when he will have electricity again.  He is within sight of the downed pole that services only a few [...]

Slicker than Snot!

Well, okay …. maybe that’s NOT the word your want to associate with anything coming close to your yarns, but GUESS WHAT?? Y’member before the storm I told you Tom Diak was sending me some of his Darn Pretty Needles?  He had said he wanted to send some samples, and since I’m not the greedy [...]

I’m here, it’s really me this time

We had a hurricane… and … umm….
I AM BLOWN AWAY!!!!
No, not by the storm, but by all y’alls amazing cards, notes, phone calls, orders <*smooch*> and gifts, and even some surprise goodie boxes (kateyj, a note coming by snail mail).   It is all totally appreciated.  You guys are the BEST!!!!
I am sitting at the public library [...]

Another update from Scott

Talked to him this morning. He says he has plenty of food. The weather is decent. He misses his internet!!!!!!!!!!  And having power would be nice too .
The difference between his mood and outlook on the future between Katrina and Ike is tremendous.
He still hasn’t gotten the orders I mailed him [...]

From Ray’s brother

Let’s see if I can post without screwing up Ray’s blog .
As of last evening when I talked to him he had lots of MREs but not much stuff he would really call food for the palate.  Off and on he now has shared use of a generator with his neighbor.  This gives him [...]

Baby steps

Hi-

I just had a brief conversation with Ray. He’s doing ok, but still a long way from “normal.” When we spoke, he was standing in a long line of people waiting for food.
People have asked what he needs, aside from a steady stream of business, and he said non-perishable food that doesn’t need either to be cooked [...]

Thanks for the support

Aloha, all!

This is Lisa, posting from Maui again.  I’m really, really glad to hear from everyone and grateful for all the support for Ray.  I’ve only heard from him briefly, he is trying to save cell phone battery time- as there’s no place to charge the phone- and not calling out much.  When I did [...]

Ray needs our support!

Aloha from Maui, again.
I had a brief conversation with Ray over the weekend. He opted to go home, rather than spend more time in a house with 16 people, several very small children and a number of dogs.   He has no power, and no way to charge his cell phone, so he will only have [...]

RAY IS SAFE!!!!!

Hi-

This is Lisa, posting from Maui.  It’s lunchtime Saturday in Houston, and our mutual friend Dez in Baton Rouge got a call from Ray saying he and his family are safe.  He also made a quick trip by his home, and it is intact, but may have some roof damage/leaks.  There is no power anywhere, [...]

Fasten Your Seat Belts

Normally I use the blog for (mostly) knitterly stuff, so let’s get that  done first
Last night a started a scarf with some hand-dyed Briggs & Little rustic yarn on a size 10 needle.  Just a simple 1×1 rib, and made about 6 inches in the few hours of the evening.   I won’t be taking this [...]

Evening update

Okay, so we’re about 30-36 hours from landfall of Ike.   And every few hours, when the forecast maps update, the projected path nudges more and more to the east.  I like that.  Don’t get me wrong — it’s going to be hellacious, no matter what. But I desparately want to be on the clean (west/left) [...]

YYAAYYyyyy… a tiny piece of good (?) news

y’member I was concerned about my yarns due to come in via UPS tomorrow?   Well, I just visited the UPS website (AGAIN) and they finally posted their status re: Hurricane Ike.  There will be NO service in my zip code area.    Well, THANK COMMON SENSE!
And it appears that the Post Office will also [...]

Mid-day!

Okay, so it’s getting kinda wierd for me, but mostlyi it’s just that nebulous ambiguous anxiety, so I”m just working through it.
Everything that I could have dyed and should have dyed has now been dyed, dried, packed and shipped … or is now waiting for the mail carrier for the stragglers.   EVERYthing else is waiting [...]

48 Hours until…. IKE! Yike!

Okay, it’s just after 10:00, and the evening news has shown a map that the “cone of uncertainty” is leaning more and more toward the Houston area, and parts of my area are under mandatory evacuation.  There was even a quote from the mayor of Galveston saying “the time for mandatory evacuation has already passed”.  [...]

Public Service Announcement

Consider this your “Public Service Announcement”.
Earlier today I received an order  for some yarns to be dyed up as soon as the yarn arrives.  Just a few moments ago, my customer wrote me to say her credit and personal information had been compromised by her MORTGAGE COMPANY, and she’s been busy closing accounts and so [...]

Opinions, critical eyes, constructive criticism, please

Okay, so I did it.
I made a first draft of an advertising banner for use on Ravelry.  Whattaya think?

You can click on it for the full size image.

Here Comes Ike

Supposedly, if Hurricane Ike continues its current track, it will likely hit near Corpus Christi, possibly up into Matagorda Bay.   This will put Houston (ME!!!) on the dirty side of the storm, very likely getting at least heavy tropical storm winds and rain, possibly winds up to Hurricane Cat 1 strength at times.
I’ve had one [...]
