Here’s another picture of the same scarf, all laid out so you can see how the effect works with different sequences of colors on the yarns.  This was knit with an assortment of Falkland superwash sport weight,

but you can do the same thing with sock yarn, which I did for this scarf here; the colors are more muted, but you can still see how the knitting is back and forth, but the stripes are running zig-zag vertically!

You can make yours wider or narrower, lighter or heavier yarn, bigger or smaller needles … it doesn’t matter!  Every yarn has its own color sequence, so even if you knit the same pattern over and over, each yarn will give you a slightly different resulting color pattern!
